The first meeting is at an important time for the U.S. economy, as the U.S. economy continues to recover from the Great Recession. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in October 2012, employment increased by 431,000 jobs, the most since July 2009. This was the largest gain in employment in nearly five years.
Today’s meeting included issues related to the federal budget, including savings from the recent legislation that extended the debt limit. In the past, several meetings in the last two weeks have included these topics. However, today’s meeting focused on the federal budget.
The White House released a fact sheet on President Obama’s recent budget proposal for 2013. The fact sheet said that the Administration’s budget proposal would cut the deficit in half by 2015, balance the budget in 10 years, and grow the economy. The budget would reduce the deficit from $1.2 trillion in 2012 to $519 billion by 2015.
Obama’s proposed budget would cut spending by more than $4 trillion over the next decade. According to the fact sheet, nearly every major domestic program would be reduced or eliminated under the President’s proposal. Major reductions would also be made in defense spending.
