Laurence Fournier (1654–1735) was a French architect, engineer and draughtsman. He is known for building Hôtel de la Berbérie (1725–1728) in Barbès-Rochechouart, now a listed monument.
Biography
Fournier was born in Nancy, the son of architect Pierre Fournier, and studied architecture under Jacques Gabriel. He was apprenticed to Jean Baptiste Laumonnier, and became the architect of Hôtel de la Berbérie in 1725. The client was Charles-François Leclerc, comte de Villeroy, who wanted to impress foreign visitors with an exotic setting.
The hotel is built of stone and brick, with white-painted brick exterior courtyards and corridors, and a yellow-pink sandstone façade. Fournier was able to incorporate a sandstone floor into the construction of the building, as there was no need for a plinth. This is said to be one of the first examples of the use of sandstone for public buildings. The entire building project lasted 18 months, and the exterior walls were completed by January 1728. The rooms and service elements were completed by 1731. Villeroy's primary intention was to build an exotic Egyptian-style house, which he did, and on a smaller scale than the nearby, built by Fournier's brother-in-law Jean-François Perrier.
Fournier left the Hôtel de la Berbérie in 1735, and was replaced by his son.
